The Deputy Amir HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al Thani attended the opening of the 7th Conference of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) on Monday.
Addressing the opening of the conference, Speaker of Shura Council HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al Mahmoud said Qatar’s hosting of this conference is a confirmation of the determination and sincere efforts made by the state under the leadership of the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani to combat corruption, given the devastating effects of this phenomenon on countries and their people.
HE said corruption is a major obstacle to sustainable development, and that if it remains outside of control, freedom will not be allowed to expand and justice will not be allowed to prevail. “Many countries are witnessing a popular mobility that calls for reform and fight against corruption. These calls are still expanding day by day, which gives this conference great importance,” he added.
He said GOPAC had made pioneering contribution since it was established in 2002. It plays a vital role in the global campaign against corruption by establishing a global alliance of parliamentarians who work to combat corruption and avoid its economic and political impacts as well as its social cost.
He said Qatar supports all international efforts to combat corruption, and stands with all its capabilities with GOPAC and its programmes aimed at eliminating corruption or reducing its effects.
