THE British Council on Saturday hosted Qatar’s Second National Study UK Alumni Awards, as part of the Qatar British Festival 2019, to celebrate and recognise achievements of alumni in Qatar as business professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
The award ceremony sponsored by HSBC Bank Qatar, AFG College, and University of Aberdeen was attended by British Ambassador to Qatar HE Ajay Sharma, Sheikha Aisha bint Falah al Thani, and other senior guests, including the nine nominated finalists for the awards.
The finalists for the first award category, ‘Professional Achievement Award’, which recognises UK alumni who have distinguished themselves through exemplary leadership and achievements in their professional industry, and who can demonstrate the impact and scale of their achievements in their professional field, were Sheikha Dena Ahemd al Thani, Alla al Awaisi and Samar Aboulsoud.
The finalists for the second awards category, ‘Entrepreneurial Award’, which highlights alumni who have played a leading role in business innovation, were Khalifa al Haroon, Nawar al Mutlaq and Vijay Sivasankaran.
The finalist for the last awards category, ‘Social Impact Award’, which acknowledges alumni who have made an exceptional contribution to creating positive social change, were Reema al Merekhi, Sharifa Noaman al Emadi and Rania Sawalhi. Sheikha Aisha bint Falah al Thani expressed her pride in witnessing achievements of individuals making changes within the celebration of UK higher education and the impact on individuals, communities and countries.
“The deep-rooted ties between Qatar and the UK get reflected especially in the educational successes being witnessed. I believe all the participants today have contributed to this success, including the sponsors, officials and alumni,” she said.
Speaking of the large number of applications received by the jury, she said, “We were surprised by the number of applications we received for the National Study UK Alumni awards. All the applicants have graduated from the biggest universities and colleges of the UK. The response was really overwhelming and a source of pride for us.” The winners of the 2019/2020 awards are Alla al Awaisi, Khalifa al Haroon and Reema al Merekhi.
