Ambassador of Indonesia to Qatar HE Muhammad BasriSidehabi underlined the growing ties between Qatar and his country, particularly in the field of trade exchange and investment, at the opening of the ‘Indonesia Expo 2019: Gateway to Indonesian Products’ held at the Intercontinental Doha The City on Sunday.
The first solo exhibition of Indonesian productsin Doha, it featured more than 40 companies from diverse sectors including mainly food, as well as handicrafts, fashion, medical equipment, charcoal, furniture and manpower service, among others. The exhibition was organised by the Embassy of Indonesia in Doha and aimed at opening opportunities and collaboration between Qatar and Indonesia.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Sidehabi said that trade volume between Qatar and Indonesia increased by 154 percent in 2018, equivalent to US$ 877 million compared to US$346 million in 2017, as per the records of the Qatar Chamber. He added that Qatari exports to Indonesia increased by $728 million last year while Indonesia’s export to Qatar increased to $148 million in 2018.
“It is quite an encouraging number, but I am convinced that there are ample rooms for enhancing our trade volume and investment for the countries’ mutual benefitstyrengthening of economic ties. In that sense, Indonesia Expo 2019 is a part of the effort to achieve that goal”,Sidehabi said.
A delegation from Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and lndustryand its Aceh Province also participated in the event.
According to Hendra Hartono Turman, president of the Indonesia Qatar Business Council and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and lndustry, they are keen on increasing the presence of Indonesian products in Qatar.
He said currently Indonesia exports mainly automotive products to Qatar, but they hope to see a more vibrant trade between the two countries, with greater presence of Indonesian food and beverages and fashion in the Qatari market.
“This is the first step and an important initiative from the Indonesian Embassy to actively promote our products in Qatar. We want to reach out to all the markets in this country through this exhibition and through the meetings and business networking activities to be held outside this event”,Turman said.
The expo also celebrated the rich Indonesian culture through cultural performances presented on the occasion.
The event was attended by Qatar Indonesia Business Council President Farhan al Sayed, representatives of Qatar Chamber, diplomats and members of the business community in the country.
