In an effort to support and revive the tradition of ‘Mappila songs’ (‘Mappila Paattu’ in Indian language), Indian expatriate association Friends of Rhythm & Mercy (FORM), will organise a musical event in Doha on December 12. The event will be held at the indoor court of Qatar Volleyball Association at Al Arabi Sports Club.
Titled ‘Manjanipoonilavu’, the event will be led by renowned Indian musician and playback singer M Jayachandran.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, EM Sudheer, an office-bearer of the association, said, “Traditional Muslim songs of the Indian state of Kerala showcase a distinct cultural identity, and it has a strong influence in the life of Kerala expatriates in the Gulf region. The songs deal with themes such as love, satire, heroism and religion, and are often sung on occasions of birth and marriage.”
Folklore Muslim songs often use words from Persian, Hindustani, and Tamil, apart from Arabic and Malayalam. However, the grammatical syntax is always based in Malayalam.
Mappila Paattu forms an integral part of the heritage of Malayalam literature and is seen by some as the most popular branch of Malayalam literature.
An award instituted by the forum in the name of late Erinholy Moosa will be presented on the occasion to an artist from Kerala who contributes to popularising the Muslim folklore song tradition. A cash award of QR5,000 and a plaque will be given to the award winner.
“We also aim to provide financial support to backward children who are talented in music and arts,” Sudheer said. FORM Qatar will also honour M Jayachandran, who successfully completed 25 years in the film Industry as a music director and singer.
Popular playback singer Vijay Yesudas, Karthik, Swetha Mohan, Jyotsna, Kannur Sherif and Rahna will perform at the event.
A brochure of the event was also released at the press conference in Doha, recently.
Office-bearers of the forum who attended the press conference included KK Usman, Mohammed Easa, Anwar Babu, KM Varghese, Amanulla Vadakkangara, Anwar Hussain, Nadir Mohamed, Naufal, Kalam Aboobacker, Sameer Kalanthan, Razak Rotana, Salman Elayidom, Mansoor Ali and Thahir Pattara.
