THE Somali government on Thursday received aid from Qatar consisting of equipment provided by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and six boats provided by the Ministry of Interior.
The shipment was delivered to the Somali side by the Ambassador of Qatar to Somalia HE Hassan bin Hamza Hashem.
A ceremony was held on the occasion, which was attended by Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of State for Defense, Police Commander in Somalia, Turkey’s ambassador to Somalia, and a number of officials and officers of the Somali army and police.
In his speech on the occasion, the Somali Deputy PM expressed his thanks and appreciation for the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani and to the Qatari people, praising Qatar’s efforts to enhance cooperation between the two brotherly countries.
“We are honoured to attend this occasion and celebrate the receipt of boats, tractors and agricultural equipment provided by Qatar within the framework of its continued support for Somalia,” he said, adding that the central government will use these to improve the security situation and other aspects that benefit the government and the people of Somalia.
He also mentioned Qatar’s humanitarian aid for those affected by the floods in Beledweyne.
“I appreciate Qatar’s continued assistance to the people of Somalia, especially in times of adversity and during calamities,” he added.
He said Qatar has been helping Somalia and supporting the central government in security and economic development, and is one of the first countries to respond to Somalia’s calls, the latest of which was the initiative for the victims of the bombing of Mogadishu municipality in July this year.
The equipment provided by Qatar will be useful for agriculture and the boats will enhance the efficiency of the Somali police and will be used for marine purposes, he said.
