BAZM-e-Alig, the alumni association of India’s Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Qatar, celebrated the 202nd birth anniversary of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan at Oryx Rotana Hotel recently.
More than 200 AMU alumni residing in Qatar attended the event and paid glowing tributes to Sir Syed, who played key role in modernising education for the Muslim community in India.
Born on October 17, 1817, in Delhi, Sir Syed was a great reformer who founded Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875 in Aligarh which later developed into the Aligarh Muslim University. His work gave rise to a new generation of Muslim entrepreneurs and politicians.
Speaking on the occasion, the President of Bazm-e-Alig Nadeem Mahir urged the members to unite and work towards the cause of Sir Syed.
Chief Guest Professor Abdul Raheem Kidwai, director, University Grant Commission, Human Resource Centre at AMU, also applauded the efforts of Sir Syed and congratulated the members of Bazm-e-Alig on this occasion.
Moosa Zainal Moosa, ex-advisor to the minister of culture and heritage and the patron of Bazm-e-Alig spoke at length about Sir Syed and his mission and also outlined the objectives of Bazm-e-Alig and the idea behind the formation of the association in 1988.
Asif Azmi, managing director of New Delhi based Shezon Media Pvt Ltd also graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
Other prominent attendees at the event included Vice President of Bazm-e-Alig Aqil Mehmood, General Secretary Osama Shamsi, Hafiz Hamad Khaleeq and Nadeem Jafar among others.
The event also featured a short interesting quiz contest conducted by Joint Secretary Arshad Amin and Treasurer Tariq Rasheed Khan.
Mementos were also presented to the chief guest and guest of honour on the occasion. Bazm-e-Alig also felicitated Ms Aaleena Fayaz from MES Indian School, who scored the highest marks in Urdu language in Class X examination among Indian schools in Qatar.
Bazm-e-Alig also distributed certificates to all the winners of the Painting and Running Competition held at Al Bidda Park in April this year.
The event also saw the release of a book titled ‘Qatar ki Nakabandi’, an Urdu translation by Nadeem Mahir, of a book on the siege of Qatar, originally published by Al Jazeera Centre for Studies in Arabic and first translated into Urdu by veteran journalist Ashraf Siddqui.
Many other dignitaries from various organisations, also attended the function. The function ended with the singing of AMU Tarana by the members followed by the traditional Annual Sir Syed Dinner.
