THE Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) Qatar kicked-off at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) recently with more than 1,700 students of 87 nationalities in attendance.
The three-day conference aims to hone leadership skills of high school students through discussions, debates and negotiations addressing real world problems and pressing global issues. Qatar Shell has been the sole sponsor of THIMUN in Qatar for 12 consecutive years.
In his keynote speech at the opening ceremony, Mohammed Abu Jbara, corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager at Qatar Shell, said: “Qatar Shell is proud to have supported this outstanding programme since its inception 12 years ago as the Qatar MUN Programme and then as The Hague International Model United Nations Programme for the last five years. THIMUN touches both the human and social pillars of the Qatar National Vision 2030 which we strongly support, through its focus on education, teamwork, and leadership.”
He added: “The key objectives of the THIMUN programme are well-aligned with Qatar Shell’s CSR strategy, of which collaboration with key local partners, that help to reinforce Qatari talent and capabilities, is an integral part.”
Qatar Shell’s CSR programmes support the development of Qatar in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. In addition to training around 300 Qatari staff, Qatar Shell also contributes to national talent development.
“THIMUN Qatar is unique because it is student- led, with high school students running the conference for their peers”, said Lisa Martin, head of THIMUN Qatar. “The event allows students to discuss challenging international issues and gives them an opportunity to practice real-world leadership skills on an international scale. I am immensely proud of their contributions to civil and informed discourse and their ability to host such a tremendous event”, Martin added.
This year schools from virtually all GCC countries were represented at the conference, in addition to new participants from Indonesia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Spain and Taiwan.
