It wasn’t just Mohammed al Rumaihi who provided the shotgun joy for Qatar by clinching an Olympics quota place in the men’s trap event at the 14th Asian Championships on Wednesday. The Qatar men’s trap team added to home delight by winning the bronze medal.
The Qatar team of Mohammed al Rumaihi, Rashid al Athba, and Saeed Abu-Sharib tallied 354 points to finish behind Kuwait 363 (Naser Meqlad, Khaled al Mudhaf and Talal al Rashidi) and India 357 (Kynan Chenai, Manavjit Sandhu and Prithviraj).
Meanwhile, the Chinese juggernaut continued to roll. The men’s 25 metres rapid fire pistol final, which saw China claim a medal sweep.
Lin Junmin took the gold medal with a total of 35, while Li Yuehong finished second with 32 and Yao Zhaonan came third with 27.
There was disappointment, however, for China in the 10m air rifle mixed team gold medal-match as Yang Qian and Yu Haonan lost 16-14 to South Korea’s Keum Jihyeon and Choo Byounggil.
Third place went to China’s Zhao Ruozhu and Song Buhan, 16-6 winners over Iran’s Najmeh Khedmati and Hossein Bagheri in the bronze medal match.
India shooters bagged eight medals on the second day of the championships, but narrowly missed out on at least three possible Tokyo 2020 Olympics quota places.
India, thus, increased its medals tally to 13 after the five the country’s shooters won on Tuesday.
India’s tally now stands at four gold, three silver and six bronze medals.
In the men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, Anish Bhanwala finished 11th in qualification and in the end, he narrowly missed out on an Olympic quota to a Thai competitor, who finished 10th to pick up the fourth quota place on offer.
The other quotas in the event went to Japan, Korea and Pakistan. China’s world champion Lin Junmin won gold in the event.
The Indian trio of Anish, Bhavesh Shekhawat and Adarsh Singh, however, won the team bronze with a combined score of 1716. Korea bagged the silver while China clinched the gold.
Indian shooters in the junior section of the same event also emulated their seniors with Ayush Jindal, Ayush Sangwan and Japtyesh Jaspal winning the team bronze.
India picked up two gold, two silver and two bronze medals additionally in the junior men’s and women’s 50m Rifle Prone competitions.
The junior men’s team comprising Niraj Kumar, Abid Ali Khan and Harshrajsinhji Gohil logged a total of 1845 to win the gold ahead of China and Korea. The junior women’s prone team comprising Nishchal, Bhakti Khamkar and Kinnori Konar also won the team gold with a combined score of 1836.3.
