The General Directorate of Traffic is developing a three-pronged plan to reduce accidents at Sealine in Mesaieed ahead of the winter-camping season.
Colonel Mohammed Radi al Hajri, the Director of Traffic Awareness Department, said the plan would use a combination of awareness, deterrence and quality control to check accidents.
Col Hajri said his department would hold seminars ahead of the camping season to raise awareness on the dangers of reckless driving, especially on sand dunes and deep inside the desert.
The second leg of the plan would see increased patrols on roads leading to and from Sealine area to deter campers, beach-goers and picnickers from committing traffic violations, he said.
The third leg seeks to ensure the road-worthiness of motorcycles, quad-bikes and all-terrain vehicles that are available for the public for rent at Sealine, Col Hajri added.
He pointed out that all these measures were aimed at reducing injuries and fatalities during the upcoming camping season.
The colonel said the camping season comes with a lot of excitement and recklessness and lives are lost because of that.
He called on families in Qatar to make sure their children don’t drive cars or ride bikes that are not appropriate for their ages.
Col Hajri also called on youngsters not to endanger their lives by driving vehicles, whether motorcycles or four-wheelers, carelessly and without taking adequate safety precautions.
