Cologne: Some 10,000 people protested peacefully against Turkey’s military incursion into north-eastern Syria in the German city of Cologne on Saturday, although the number of participants remained below expectations.
According to police estimates, around 10,000 people attended a big rally in the city centre.
The rally’s organisers urged the German government not just to criticise the Turkish offensive but also take concrete steps against it, for example calling on the UN Security Council or exerting pressure on Turkey in the Council of Europe.
“Germany must not stand alongside a despot,” they said.
Police had said on Friday they were considering a ban of the protest due to fears of violence, but gave it the go-ahead on Saturday morning. Feared clashes between pro-Kurdish marchers and supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan failed to occur, a police spokesman said. (DPA)
