Doha: The Cabinet has approved draft legislation setting a minimum wage for workers in Qatar, Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs HE Yousuf Mohamed al Othman Fakhroo said in Doha on Wednesday.
The Cabinet has also streamlined the process for switching jobs within contract periods while preserving the rights of both the employer and the employee, he added. Speaking at an event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Fakhroo said the Cabinet has also adopted a draft law to abolish exit permits for parties not subject to the provisions of the Qatari Labour Law and domestic workers. He said the legislation will be enforced immediately.
The minister underlined that Qatar was keen to launch a package of policies and legislative amendments to ensure workers enjoy decent wages and working conditions. ILO Deputy Director General for Field Operations and Partnerships Moussa Oumarou said ILO had a team of dedicated professionals working closely with ADLSA colleagues in Qatar, supporting the ambitious labour reforms the country had embarked on. “Every day, they facilitate dialogue between the government, employers and workers to ensure that the reforms that are being considered have everyone’s support and buy-in. This is how industrial and social peace are achieved, my friends.” — CATHERINE W GICHUKI
