Qatar Cancer Society (QCS), in cooperation with the National Center for Cancer Care & Research (NCCCR), and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), recently organised the second symposium on ‘Haematological Malignancies for Primary Care’, at the QCS training centre.
As many as 100 physicians, nurses and allied healthcare professionals attended the symposium.
Dr Hadi Mohamad Abu Rasheed, head of Professional Development and Scientific Research Department at QCS, said, “This symposium aims to enable the participants to interpret blood profile (CBC) and coagulation diagnostic studies to find out symptoms of haematological malignancies and to decide whether a patient should be referred to as a suspected cancer case, in line with the guidelines of the Ministry of Public Health.”
“According to the latest Qatar National Cancer Registry (QNCR) published by Ministry of Public Health, in 2015, blood cancers were the second common form of cancers in Qatar after breast cancer. There were 196 newly-diagnosed cases of blood cancers (Leukemia, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Hodgkin Lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma) during the period, representing 13.37 percent of all cancer cases in the country,” he said.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization, blood cancers were the sixth common cancer in the world in 2018 after lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and stomach cancer, he pointed out.
Dr Abu Rasheed stressed the importance of periodic tests for early detection of the disease. “Each type of blood cancer has a different way of spreading and responding to treatment, so it is important to determine the type,” he added.
This CPD activity was a Category 1 - Accredited Group Learning Activity as defined by the Qatar Council for Healthcare Practitioners Accreditation Department and was approved for a maximum of 4.75 hours.
