As part of the activities of the fifth edition of the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel which will run from October 13 to 16, the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel Committee has selected former education minister and linguistics expert Dr Mohammaad Abdel-rahim Kafoud to receive the Al Dhad Shield award.
Al Dhad Shield was included in the activities of the Katara Prize in the fourth edition of 2018 to shed light on personalities who made outstanding contributions to the service of the Arabic language through research, studies and published books.
Dr Mariam al Nuaimi, a professor of literary criticism at Qatar University, received the award in the previous edition.
Dr Kafoud is known for his interest in Arabic and has made significant contributions to the advancement of the Arabic language in Qatar.
He is also a member of several cultural committees and activities at the regional level, including membership of the Board of Trustees of the Al-Babtain Foundation for Poetic Creativity in Kuwait, a member of the Advisory Committee of the Arab Thought Foundation in Lebanon and a member at Global Forum for Moderation in Jordan.
He has many books and articles published in Arabic literature and modern criticism.
The events accompanying the Katara Prize for Arabic Novel include a number of programmes and activities such as the selection of the literary figure of the year, which was adopted since the second edition in 2016, when the Tunisian writer Mahmoud al Massadi was chosen as the literary figure of the year, in addition to the launch of a book documenting the life of the Kuwaiti and Gulf novelist Ismail Fahad Ismail, as well as launching other books and magazine.
