Australian Ambassador to Qatar HE Jonathan Muir welcomed members of the Australian Parliament Senator Catryna Bilyk, Senator Sam McMahon and Sharon Claydon MP to Qatar on the first visit by Australian parliamentarians since the Australian Embassy opened in 2016.
The delegation met Shura Council members HE Nasser bin Khalil al Jaida, HE Abdulla bin Fahad al Marri and HE Reem bint Mohammed al Mansoori. The team also met Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HE Dr Ahmad Hassan al Hamadi, Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Financial Centre Yousuf al Jaida, Deputy General Counsel Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Dana Mohamed al Noaimi and Head of the International Labour Organisation Office Houtan Homayounpour.
The parliamentarians toured the National Museum of Qatar and Qatar Foundation, and met members of the Australian business community in Qatar.
Commenting on the visit, Ambassador Muir said, “It was an honour to welcome a delegation of Australian representatives to Qatar so soon after my arrival. It was great for them to see firsthand how Qatar is preparing for the FIFA World Cup 2022 as many Australians will be travelling to Qatar to cheer on our national team.
“The delegation was particularly interested to hear about Qatar’s progress on labour rights and how Australian businesses are doing in Qatar.”
