The most common diseases among children are diarrhea, dehydration and upper respiratory infections URI, depending on the season of the year, a Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) doctor has said.
Speaking to media persons, Al Wakra Hospital Chief of Paediatric Department and Senior Consultant of Paediatric and Neonatology Dr Khalil Salameh said the diseases vary from summer to winter.
“In summer, most of children suffer from diarrhea and dehydration, and in winter most of the cases are of influenza, upper respiratory infections and pneumonia, especially among children aged six to 18 months,” he said.
According to him, the departments that require high levels of processing are intensive care for children and intensive care for newborns.
He said, “We have the latest equipment available globally in the two sections and we have laboratories with the latest equipment to do various medical analyses with high accuracy.”
Dr Salameh said, “In the first year of opening in 2013, we recorded 2,200 deliveries. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, the number of births ranged from 5,600 to 6,000.”
He added that paediatricians attend the delivery and caesarean sections should the baby needs any resuscitation.
“After birth, we educate the mother how to take care of the baby, the vital signs and the emergency things she has to pay attention to. Postnatal care has a capacity of 52 beds, including obstetric and gynaecological cases,” Dr Salameh said
He said in normal birth, the mother remains with the child 24 hours at the hospital while she stays with the baby in the hospital for 72 hours in the case of caesarean section.
“We must follow up the situation of the child during this period. We make sure there are no birth defects in the child, especially because heart disease may appear a day or two after birth,” he said.
