Ailyn Agonia/ with pic DOHA TWENTY-five London-based artists representing about 15 different nationalities from across the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Australia will bring to life for the first time on Doha stage West End Musical’s ‘Broken Wings’, written by acclaimed Qatari musician, composer, songwriter and symphonic artist Dana al Fardan together with West End’s very own star NadimNaaman. The show based on Khalil Gibran’s masterpiece will be played for three days at the Opera House of Katara Cultural Village from November 7 to 9, with matinees and soiree performances. The 13 cast and 12 members of the production’s creative team flying from London will be joined by Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) during the Doha debut of the show. Broken Wings was first performed in London in August, 2018, at Theatre Royal Haymarket to sold out shows. The musical was recently performed in Lebanon in July in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the prestigious Beiteddine Arts Festival. “The first thing Nadim and I discussed was the need to project our shared cultural heritage on a wider global platform. We sought to focus specifically on the rich, universally relevant content in Arab literature and philosophy. Our mission, as we work together, is to counter all the common predispositions held about the Arab world. Art is the language of progress and enlightenment. It’s a unifying force with the capacity to break down barriers”, said Dana al Fardan during a press conference to announce the show held at Katara Building 15 on Monday. The musical sheds light on Khalil Gibran as a person and his evolution. Recently, one of the songs of the musical, ‘Selma’ was filmed in the prolific writer’s hometown as a tribute to his literary achievement. Broken Wings cast is led by co-writer NadimNaaman as Gibran, Hanna Qureshi as Selma and SoophiaForoughi as Mother. “The Middle East has, for many years, received touring productions of many popular Western musical and plays. But it is now time for the Middle East to create and enjoy its own heritage and culture on the stage. And more importantly, it is time for the rest of the world to enjoy artistic creations form this beautiful and historic region”, said Nadim. The show’s Director Bronagh Lagan remarked, “When it came to directing Broken Wings, I wanted to create a world that could change time and location in a heartbeat. The show was a huge success in London and received critical acclaim. I was so proud of what we created, but the next part of the adventure surpassed all exceptions. This summer we had the privilege of showcasing Broken Wings at the Beiteddine Festival in Gibran’s homeland. The response was incredible and the story resonated so much more in Lebanon, elevating it to a whole new level. And now we will get the chance to take our tale to the homeland of one of our own writers Dana al Fardan.” The musical is coming to Doha in association with Katara, Broken Wings Cultural Partner, Qatar Airways, Mondrian Doha, Qatar Foundation and Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra as sponsors.
