Turkey’s Ambassador to Qatar HE Fikret Ozer paid homage to Turkey’s ‘Father of the Nation’ Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the Turkish armed forces who fought between 1919 and 1922 against then colonial powers. Marking the 97th Victory Day, the Turkish envoy said Turkish people are celebrating the anniversary of Turkey’s War of Independence with great pride. Present on the occasion were Ambassador Khalid Al-Hamar, Director of Asian Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Said Al Hajeri, Deputy Director, Protocol Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, officials of the armed forces of Qatar and Turkish armed forces, and the defense attaches of various countries.
The Turkish envoy said that August 30 is a day that symbolises what the nation accomplished even under the most difficult conditions, when it was a matter of independence or submission. “It was not only a military victory but a turning point in the Turkish history paving the way for the foundation of modern, democratic Turkish Republic,” he said.
He said Turkey still possesses the same willpower that was proven 97 years ago, “and we are determined more than ever to take all necessary measures to counter the terrorism threats damaging the existence, unity and welfare of our country.”
The envoy said that 30th August Victory should be a lesson for these heinous groups as Turkey is determined to ensure the security and well being of its citizens. “Operations Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch are the solid proof of this determination,” he added.
Talking on Turkey-Qatar bilateral relations, he said, “Turkey is a genuine friend of Qatar and we are committed to further strengthening our deeprooted bilateral relations in every possible field including military and defense.”
He said the existence of distinguished members of the noble Turkish army in the friendly country enhances Turkish-Qatari friendship and also greatly contributes to the security and stability of the region.
Earlier, the anthems of State of Qatar and Turkey were played before the start of the program. Deputy Attache at the embassy Pinar Kerimoglu read a special message from President of Turkey His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
A short documentary was also shown on the occasion displaying key events of the Turkish freedom struggle.
