The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has unveiled plans for the construction of new pedestrian crossings ahead of 2022 FIFA World Cup for the benefit of football fans in Qatar.
The aim is to provide safe crossings on major roads and vital tourist places, in addition to achieving pedestrian traffic safety.
At present, there are a total of 44 tunnels and 30 bridges, some of which are currently under construction.
By 2022, the number of tunnels is set to increase to 47 and bridges to 49 bridges in various parts of the country.
As many as 46 tunnels and 12 bridges have been distributed on the network of Doha Metro stations to serve the train users.
Ashghal said it will construct three tunnels to serve the visitors of Doha Corniche in order to cross the road without the need to go to the main intersections in coordination with the concerned authorities, most notably the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Interior.
Three pedestrian bridges will be constructed along the A Ring Road and B Ring Road due to the high population density in the areas surrounding the two roads as well as the presence of many commercial establishments, consumer complexes, railway stations, hotels and health centres, especially clubs and sports facilities in the north. Many tourist sites are also linked by both the roads.
Six pedestrian bridges will be constructed, along with the existing bridge linking airport and Thumama areas, with a length of 66 metres and a width of four meters.
A new tunnel will be constructed on the Eastern Industrial Road. The existing bridge will serve the road users which is located in the most commercial and industrial areas in Qatar.
The industrial zone is witnessing the implementation of one of the largest projects to develop infrastructure and road transport system.
