Fuwairit Beach will be reopened to the public on Thursday, August 1, after the end of nesting season of sea turtles.
This was announced by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), represented by the Department of Environment Protection and Wildlife, on Tuesday.
In an effort to protect the environment and increase turtle population in Qatar, the MME banned people’s entry to the beach from April 1 to August 1, 2019.
The small dunes on the Fuwairit Beach are the most preferred nesting and hatching sites of turtles in the country.
Marine turtles are a group of reptiles that have adapted to live in the sea and are one of the most ancient creatures on earth.
Scientists recognise seven living species of sea turtles that live in our oceans today, including the critically endangered hawksbill turtle.
Qatar is home to three species of sea turtles, the most important of which is the hawksbill, which is of great importance to the region’s ecosystem.
Marine turtles play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs that provide nurseries for about a quarter of the ocean’s fish species.
North eastern beaches Al Ghariya, Ras Laffan and Al Maroona and four islands Halul, Sherawoo, Ras Rakkan and Umtais are the other turtle nesting sites identified in Qatar by the researchers.
With funding from Qatar Petroleum (QP), the Environmental Science Center (ESC) at Qatar University (QU) is currently implementing the Qatar Turtle Project to protect Qatar’s hawksbill turtles.
