Qatar’s roller-coaster campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup Asia Regional Final fetched them a second place behind hosts and champions Singapore who finished as the only unbeaten side on Sunday.
Singapore will travel to the UAE in October and November to figure in the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier. This event will determine which teams qualify for the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup to be held in Australia.
In the last league match, Singapore, world-ranked 23rd, crushed Nepal by 82 runs, hardly bothering for the rivals’ ranking or status. Batting first, they piled up 191 for six as man-of-the-match Tim David smashed 77 off 43 balls. His belligerent knock had eight boundaries and three sixes.
Other principal contributors for Singapore were opener Rohan Rangarajan. He cracked four sixes and three fours to collect 49 in 33 balls, while skipper Manpreet Singh took 27 balls to compile 42, including two sixes and three fours. Abinash Bohara grabbed four for 35 and Karan KC netted two for 26.
Nepal, ranked 11th in the world, collapsed for just 109 in 15 overs during the stiff chase. S Vijayakumar and Vinoth Bhaskaran took six wicket between them to trigger the freefall of the opponents. Gyanendra Malla hit three sixes and four boundaries in 39, while DS Airee got 23 in 22 balls.
The victory was third for Singapore, while their match against Kuwait was washed out, helping them share the points. They had a tally of seven points, while second-placed Qatar had just four points from two wins in four matches. Nepal also had the same win-loss record but they were edged by Qatar on better net run-rate. Kuwait were fourth and Malaysia took the bottom seat in five-team group.
On Saturday, Qatar scripted their second victory as they got the better Malaysia by four wickets with ball to spare. Mohammed Nadeem and Iqbal Hussain Chaudhry shared six scalps to restrict the rivals at 144 for ub 19.1 overs. Virandeep Singh (49 in 46 balls) and Shafiq Sharif (36 in 21 balls) resisted the Qatari bowlers most.
Nouman Sarwar blasted 47 not out in 37 balls to anchor Qatar to the victory with two balls from the finish. Kamran Khan and Tamoor Sajjad added 27 and 26,while Qalandar Khan chipped in with 25.
Two losses against Singapore and Kuwait proved too costly to Qatar. Or the Qatar team could have made the race to the finish line tight.
