As a part of its ‘Think Globally, Work Locally’ drive to create awareness about Sustainable Development Goals 2030, Birla Public School (BPS) recently hosted Dr Prakash Baba Amte, a philanthropist from Maharashtra, India, and his wife Dr Mandakini Amte.
After a warm welcome by the senior leadership team, Vice-Principal of BPS Rajesh Pillai interviewed the guests.
Dr Amte and his wife are medical degree holders, but chose a different path in their lives. They have spent five decades improving the living conditions of the local community in Hemalkasa, Maharashtra, and protecting tribes and the local fauna alike.
They started ‘The Lok Biradari Prakalp’ (LBP) project to provide medical care and education to tribal people in 1973. After a struggle of two decades, they set up a multi-specialty hospital and a residential school there. They have supported the education of many tribal students to become professionals such as doctors and engineers.
Dr Amte and his wife have received several national and international awards for their social work, including Padma Shri, Raman Magsaysay Award, Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice, and Godfrey Philips Lifetime Achievement Award.
The teachers and staff were touched to know Dr Amte’s love for animals and ‘Amte’s Animal Arc’ where animals stay together with his family.
Dr Amte was presented with a sapling, a memento and a cash amount as the school’s contribution to his great work. (TNN)
