The States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination elected Qatar’s candidate Dr Sheikha Abdulla al Misnad as the member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with an overwhelming majority.
Dr Misnad received 132 votes from a group of 180 votes during the election held at United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday. She was elected from the 14 candidates to fill nine seats on the committee, which begins in January 2020.
The election Dr Misnad emphasises her successful role in promoting the right to education and human rights principles. It also underscores Qatar’s vital role in defending human rights and its efforts in coordination with UN bodies to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
Dr Misnad was appointed president of Qatar University in 2003 as the first Qatari woman to hold this position. Since 2012, she has been a member of the Global Justice Project.
The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination includes 18 independent experts.
Members are elected for a four-year term by States parties to the Convention to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, which was adopted on December 21, 1965 and entered into force in 1969.
