Announcing the launch of paediatric renal transplant services at Sidra Medicine, Acting Chief Executive Officer Professor Robert Crone said, “With the help of our partners at HMC, we are now able to accommodate live and deceased donor transplants for children who need these life-saving interventions. Sidra Medicine will oversee the organ transplantation in children while HMC will partner with us should the donor is an adult.”
Sidra Medicine Chief Medical Officer Dr Abdulla al Kaabi said, “Effective transplants can change the life expectancy and quality of life for the patient, many of whom can go on to live normal lives without the need of dialysis. Our first patient, Mohammed, was incredibly fortunate to have the surgery done within the same facility – saving precious time.
“His surgery was a wonderful example of collaboration between our teams at Sidra Medicine and HMC as we specialise in children’s surgeries while the expert HMC team handle adult transplantations. Seeing Mohammed happily walking around the wards a few weeks after his surgery was a memorable day for the whole team. We wish him and his family a beautiful and healthy future.”
Kaabi said Sidra Medicine also provides post-transplant care.
“Organ donation is a wonderful and noble deed. The fact that Sidra Medicine’s very own Chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser has registered as an organ donor is further inspiration for many of us in Qatar to consider becoming donors,” said Dr Kaabi.
Dr Abu Bakr Imam, who oversaw the team, said Mohammed had advanced stage of kidney failure and both his father and mother were willing to donate.
However, the team went with the mother because it was a good match and the outcome has been great.
“His care will continue and there will be continuous monitoring throughout his kidney transplant course. The launch of our renal transplant service with Mohammed’s life-saving surgery is an exciting clinical milestone for Sidra Medicine,” Imam said.
HMC Acting Chief Medical Officer HMC Dr Abdulla al Ansari said, “These momentous surgeries were the product of ongoing cooperation between HMC and Sidra Medicine and this milestone is the culmination of many months of meticulous planning by our multi-disciplinary transplant team, which was led by Dr Yousuf al Maslamani.
“HMC has the benefit of over 30 years of kidney transplant experience and we are proud of our role as a pioneer and innovator in the field of organ transplantation in Qatar. We are honoured to share our experience and expertise with our colleagues at Sidra Medicine in order to make lifesaving transplantation a viable option for residents of Qatar.”
Director for Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation (Hiba) Dr Yousuf al Maslamani said, “At HMC, we are committed to supporting a organ donation. Since the Qatar Organ Donor Registry was launched in 2012, over 350,000 donors have registered. We are delighted to have shared our expertise with Sidra in the launch of its paediatric renal transplant service.”
Mohammed’s father Taher Hassnein said, “I extend my sincere thanks to the Government of Qatar and its people as well as the medical and administrative staff at Sidra Medicine, HMC and the Hiba Center for the excellent care my son received. I also want to thank my wife for donating her kidney to save our son’s life. My faith is that God will grant our son a complete recovery to lead a fulfilling life without the need for renal dialysis or future medical complications.”
