The Shura Council, at a meeting chaired by Speaker HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al Mahmoud on Monday, hosted Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohamed al Kuwari to present the ministry’s point of view on the public discussion requested by the Council members on the status of medical services in Qatar.
The minister addressed the council members, listened to their views and answered their questions.
The members’ discussion with the minister focused on the delays in scheduling appointments with doctors, conducting operations, lengthy waiting periods and emergency services and the need to increase the number of beds in hospitals.
The Council members also requested giving priority to citizens in all matters, restoring the health insurance system, involving the private sector in providing medical services, the need to develop a mechanism to regulate the treatment of visitors. They also discussed the ways to address medical errors, manufacturing medicine in Qatar and putting a system in place to regulate the disbursement of medicines.
The minister highlighted the support the health sector receives from the Amir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani.
The minister presented a detailed explanation of the reality of the current medical services and continuous development.
She outlined the ministry’s strategy and future plans for the development of health services, in addition to the new projects which include a number of hospitals, such as a mental health hospital, a children’s hospital and a hospital for the elderly.
She also referred to the recent appointment of a large number of doctors to strengthen the medical staff.
The minister said the upcoming period will see an improvement with regards to appointments waiting time and a draft law on health insurance would soon be prepared.
After the discussions, Shura speaker thanked the minister and her accompanying team for clarifying the ministry’s efforts to improve the medical services.
He said the discussions will be referred to a specialised committee of the Council to study and make recommendations thereon.
At the beginning of the meeting, Mahmoud, on behalf of the council members, thanked HH the Amir for the special attention and interest he gives to the development of health sector in Qatar which has achieved great success.
The Council discussed a draft law amending some provisions of Decree Law No 10 of 1974 regarding the establishment of Qatar Petroleum.
The Council also discussed a draft law amending some provisions of Law No 4 for the year 2008 on the rental of real estate.
After discussion, the Council approved the drafts and decided to refer them to the esteemed government.
The Council discussed the report of the Internal and External Affairs Committee on a draft law amending certain provisions of Decree Law No 14 of 1993 regarding passports. The report of the committee included recommendations to amend two articles of the draft and the reasons for the amendment. After discussion, the Council approved the draft law as amended and will forward its recommendations to the government.
The Council also discussed the report of the Internal and External Affairs Committee on a draft law on decorations, medals and military medals. After discussion, the Council approved the draft law and decided to refer it to the government.
