About 97 paddlers from different Filipino dragon boat teams in Qatar participated in simultaneous paddling and clean-up drive at Katara Beach recently.
The initiative led by Gaod Dragon Boat Team is held annually in support of Paddle for the Planet (P4P), a global movement that unites paddlers in different parts of the world aimed at raising awareness of the protection and conservation of oceans, rivers and lakes.
The Paddle for the Planet in Qatar welcomed members of Doha Dragons, Doha Wireless, K1 Kasagwan, Masterpiece Dragon Boat Team and Onslaught Racing Dragons Qatar.
Maria Cleofe Jaramillo Soro of Gaod Dragon Boat Team said, “It was a day where everyone has united for a common goal and that is to help conserve our marine life. The proceeds of the event will be donated to the P4P organisation. We would like to thank Katara for being the host of this yearly global event in Doha. We would also like to extend our appreciation to everyone who made this event possible and we hope to see them again in next year’s edition.”
Dragon boating is a growing sport among Filipinos in the country. Gaod is one of the most active dragon boat teams in Qatar advocating for the importance of the sport as well as the benefits of engaging in such activity. It has won in various local competitions as well as represented Qatar in international dragon boat festivals. The group has 73 active members to date.
The fun-filled event kicked off with a distribution of shirts and a brief opening ceremony. A simultaneous paddling, the trademark activity of the global movement, highlighted the programme along with a beach clean-up drive aimed at demonstrating the importance of caring for the environment.
