Al Sadd’s Spanish midfielder Gabi Fernandez has hailed retiring teammate Xavi hernandez as “an example to follow” as the former Barcelona legends prepares for his final match as a player.
Xavi announced he’ll be hanging up his boots via social media last week, bringing an end to glittering career which began in Barcelona.
“I speak a lot with him (Xavi) and I’ve asked him to enjoy this final. He is an example to follow not just here in Qatar, but worldwide. I hope we win so we can give him a great farewell,” the former Atletico Madrid captain said on Wednesday.
“Xavi is a global example. He’s committed, punctual and always has a smile on his face for everyone. I’ll miss him here.”
Gabi who led his Atletico team to the La Liga title in 2013/14 season in Spain, said Al Sadd wants to finish the season on a high note with a domestic double.
“I’m very motivated to play my first Amir Cup final. Since my first day at Al Sadd, all the players have told me how big this tournament is.
“We’ll be playing in a World Cup stadium, which is historical on its own. We played against Duhail twice already and the quality will be the same in the final. This team wants to finish the season on a high note, we already have the league title so we want to add this,” the 35-year-old said.
Having played in two UEFA Champions League finals himself, the Spaniard said playing in the Amir Cup final will be special.
“Both set of players have a huge responsibility tomorrow. The final will be for the country and it’s not an everyday game. I have participated in a lot of finals in my career, but I live here now and it’s special,” he added.‘Playing Amir Cup final will
