Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the world and the Arab world, hence high attention is given to patients with high blood sugar, especially in the holy month of Ramadan. This is done to avoid any complications in terms of high or low sugar or decrease in the proportion of fluids in the body and dehydration along with its associated blood clot and consequent complications, the Primary Health Care Corporation has noted.
Dr. Magdy Mehran, family medicine specialist at Mesaimeer Health Center, said one of the main goals of the Primary Health Care Corporation is to enable diabetic patients to fast without health problems and to stay healthy throughout the month. Since diabetes treatment depends significantly on some types of drugs and injections, there are some medical tips for fasting without any health problems, including visiting the family physician, organising medicines and dosages with measuring sugar in the first days of fasting several times at noon, afternoon and before and after iftar so that the physician can know the times of high and low sugar, consequently the treatment can be re-organised if necessary as well as discussing with the physician the doses’ increase or decrease based on blood sugar readings. Insulin should be taken at Al Maghreb Azan followed by breaking fasting with dates then return to Iftar after Al Maghreb prayer and not delaying iftar for more than fifteen minutes fear of low blood sugar.
Drink more fluids after iftar to avoid dehydration noting that some drugs reduce sugar by excreting it in the urine.
Drugs that are taken before breakfast in non-Ramadan days should be taken before iftar and not before Suhuras some people think, this should be discussed with the physician, and in case of doubt about whether the drug is already taken, do not take them again to avoid low sugar. In case of a high drop in sugar, break your fasting immediately and drink water with sugar or fruit juice.
Dr. Mehran recommends patients of type 1 or 2 or patients with advanced complications of diabetes to not fast as they take several doses of insulin, this is determined with the physician, and some insulin needles may vary in the way it works, and some do not need to hasten eating, there must be no tension and stress.
Finally, Dr. Merhan advised to divide and arrange treatment with the family physician to prevent stomach strikes and increased acidity, while eating balanced amounts of food and avoiding being exposed to high sugar leading to increased doses of insulin or pills which causes weight gain.
