Manila: Forty-five people were killed in drowning accidents in the Philippines from the start of summer to the Easter holidays, police said Monday. The deaths were recorded from April 5 to Easter Sunday, according to national police chief General Oscar Albayalde. Police also reported eight killed in 15 separate vehicular accidents during the same period, Albayalde said in a statement. “This serves as an eye-opener, possibly for agencies and organizations involved in promoting personal safety, to initiate programmes to develop basic drown-proofing and swimming skills as part of physical education curriculum in schools,” he said.
