Qatar’s industrial production index (IPI) reached 104.9 points in February 2019, up 3.3 percent year-on-year, but recorded a decline of 2.1 percent month-on- month, according to data published by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) on Saturday.
The indicator reflects the growth of various industrial sectors such as mining, manufacturing, electricity production, water production and desalination, with relative weightage of 83.6 percent, 15.2 percent, 0.7 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively.
According to the data, the mining sector index fell 2.4 percent in February compared to the previous month due to the decrease in quantities produced in the group of crude oil and natural gas by 2.4 percent, mining and quarrying 1.1 percent.
Meanwhile, production rose by 3.3 percent compared to the same month last year, the report said.
The manufacturing sector recorded a decline of 0.3 percent in February compared to the previous month due to a decline in production in the base metals industry by 2.6 percent, cement and other non-metallic mineral products by 2.5 percent, refined petroleum products by 2.4 percent, rubber and plastic products by 0.7 percent, and beverages by 0.1 percent.
Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products increased by 0.9 percent, and food products by 0.4 percent.
The recorded printing and cloning industry did not witness any change in production quantities during the period, the report said.
In terms of annual change in manufacturing sector, production increased by 4.1 percent due to the increase in production in the base metals industry by 19.9 percent, beverage industry by 11.8 percent, chemicals and chemical products industry by 5.2 percent, and food industry by 4.8 percent.
The rest of the groups in this sector recorded an annual decline in production including cement and other nonmetallic products industry by 11.6 percent, printing and cloning of recorded media by 10.6 percent, refined oil products by 2.8 percent and rubber and plastic products by 2.6 percent.
Production in the electricity sector fell by 7.7 percent month-on-month in February, while increased by 2 percent annually.
Production in the water sector also fell by 4.6 percent on a monthly basis and 11.7 percent year-on-year, PSA data shows.
