Doha College Primary’s young athletes are on a roll, having performed exceptionally well in not one but two major tournaments, one national and international.
Fresh from dominating the British International Schools in Qatar U11 Games at Aspire Zone and scooping first place, the young athletes went on to face teams from Europe, Asia and Africa in the COBIS Games 2019, Thailand, just a few days later.
The standards were extremely high, but so was the competitive spirit of the Doha College students, who flew the flag for Qatar and secured joint second place alongside Children’s International School, Nigeria on a podium topped by St Saviour’s School, Ikoyi.
The team of fourteen students bagged 21 individual medals: 15 bronze medals in swimming and athletics; four silver medals in swimming; and two gold medals from the outstanding performances of swimmer Arabella Taguinota (50m breaststroke) and track athlete Adam Shawara (800m event).
The girls’ football team also won silver, which – together with the boys’ placing – got DC a second place in football.
Following their success, the team had the privilege of being invited by supporting sponsor, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, for a private tour of their impressive Legacy Pavilion. Students shared their experiences of the COBIS tournament and had the unique opportunity to tour their purpose-built museum which takes the visitors on a magnificent journey through Qatar’s rich history of sport from the 1940s to today’s preparations to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Dr Steffen Sommer, principal of Doha College, shared in the team’s elation.
Sommer said, “It was a moment of great pride to see our primary athletes take silver in the COBIS Games in Thailand on the back of winning the British International Schools in Qatar Games. Our squad has done fantastically well. I would like to thank the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy for its generous support which is far beyond any expectations that we might have had.
“I am immeasurably proud. We are here to support Qatar’s vision for 2030 to provide excellence in education and we are trying very hard to make sure that the excellence that we produce within Doha College is exported outside so that the whole of Qatar can benefit from it.”
Doha College has a strong sporting tradition with alumni and current students representing Qatar in swimming and rugby championships, and also excelling internationally at other sports like golf, karate etc.
Doha College works with its academies Evolutions Sports Qatar and CrossFit Oryx and offers PE and Academic PE at (I) GCSE and A Levels.
