QATAR Green Building Council (QGBC) celebrated the success of the 7th edition of its annual ‘No Paper Day (NPD)’ campaign in an appreciation ceremony hosted and supported by the Alwadi Hotel Doha MGallery at Msheireb Downtown Doha on Thursday.
More than 90 local organisations, including various schools, hotels and companies that supported the campaign took part in the ceremony. It is the highest-ever number of local organisations so far that contributed to the initiative aimed at encouraging the local community to adopt eco-friendly initiatives geared at reducing waste across the country.
“We are excited by the continued success of ‘No Paper Day’, which has continued to grow in momentum every year. It has encouraged companies and organisations to reduce their recyclable waste and contribute to Qatar’s efforts to build a more sustainable future. Joining our efforts will do more for achieving the environmental and social pillars of Qatar’s development vision. I would like to thank all the organisations and individuals involved in this campaign for their tremendous efforts in contributing to a more sustainable future for our nation,” QGBC Director Engineer Meshal al Shamari said on the occasion.
The 2019 NPD campaign also helped the participating organisations raise awareness among their staff about waste and the importance of reducing it, and how they can take steps to increase recycling and practice environmental stewardship.
During the campaign, participating local organisations enjoined their staff to collect recyclable items such as newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles and aluminum and steel cans and bring the items to the QGBC office.
This year, the programme has included e-waste in the campaign. Items included in the e-waste category are old mobile phones, old televisions, tablets and printers among others.
QGBC partnered with local companies for collection and recycling – Elite Paper recycling for paper and cardboard, and Global Metals for plastic and metal.
During the ceremony, Engineer Meshal al Shamari, director, QGBC, awarded certificates of appreciation and achievement to representatives from participating companies for their contribution to the campaign.
Some of the companies were also given an opportunity to share their journey in supporting the initiative.
