Qatar and Germany have agreed that political solution, not military, is the best option to resolve the Libyan crisis, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani has said.
“The government of national reconciliation is the legitimate one that resulted from the resolutions of international legitimacy,” Sheikh Mohammed said during a joint press conference with his German counterpart Heiko Maas in Berlin on Thursday.
The FM called on countries not to use double standards in dealing with Haftar forces.
Sheikh Mohammed expressed the hope that a conducive atmosphere will prevail to end the ongoing Gulf crisis. “We regret that we cannot control a crisis that we did not create,” he said, appreciating the mediation efforts by Kuwait Amir HH Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah.
The FM appreciated the German position demanding preservation of the Gulf Cooperation Council. “We are still looking forward to a strong GCC in the future,” he said.
The FM reiterated Qatar’s openness to unconditional dialogue, which must be in accordance with international law and does not violate the sovereignty of any country.
He said Qatar and Germany have important economic partnership and praised the role played by German companies in Qatar.
Sheikh Mohammed said talks with the German Foreign Minister dealt with the joint coordination between the two countries in the areas of security under the German presidency of the UN Security Council.
He expected Germany, as it assumes the presidency of UN Security Council, will play a key role in stopping the military escalation in Libya.
