THE two-kilometre stretch of Fuwairit Beach will be an exclusive zone for turtles for the next four months.
In an effort to protect the environment and increase turtle population in Qatar, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment has banned people’s entry to the beach until August, 2019.
It is noteworthy that the small dunes on the Fuwairit Beach are the most preferred nesting and hatching sites of turtles in the country.
“Fencing on the Fuwairit Beach has almost been completed and a camp house has been opened for further developments. Nesting is expected to begin shortly and the hatching will begin in the first week of May”, an environmentalist and researcher involved in this project told Qatar Tribune.
A public notice issued by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment urged residents to stay away from the site for a period of four months. It also urged the public to report violations to the Environmental Operations Unit through a hotline 998.
Meanwhile, in an effort to create awareness about the environment students from selected schools will be allowed to visit the hatching area at specific hours to be announced by the authority later.
Marine turtles play an important role in the ecosystem by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs that provide nurseries for about a quarter of the ocean’s fish species. North eastern beaches Al Ghariya, Ras Laffan and Al Maroona and four islands Halul, Sherawoo, Ras Rakkan and Umtais are the other turtle nesting sites identified in Qatar by the researchers.
