Parliamentarians participating in the 140th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly on Tuesday called for better legislation and cooperation with the UN to implement and monitor development programmes in poor and developing countries.
This came during a meeting of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs which discussed the parliamentary follow-up to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in preparation for the 2019 session of the United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.
The participants also discussed building a legal system to improve monitoring and guarantee freedoms without discrimination in order to accelerate achievement of SDGs 2030.
The participants called for economic measures to achieve the well-being of the people, as well as to ensure good education and health care.
The participants also emphasised the importance of focusing on technology and knowledge-based economy, increasing active participation of women and youth and developing a network of parliamentarians to follow up on the achievement of development goals.
They stressed the need to reduce the gap between developed and developing countries and also to cut military spending and channelling these funds to fight poverty and promote health as well as education.
The meeting reviewed the results of a study conducted by the IPU on assessing the institutional character of parliaments and how to empower them to realise the goals of sustainable development.
During the meeting, representative of Jordan Khaled Bakkar said that his country had committed itself to achieving the goals of sustainable development 2030.
