Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup for the first time in the Middle East and that will be a great opportunity for the region and the Arab world, a top Qatari diplomat has said.
“The event (World Cup) acts as an incentive for Qatar and the region to advance social progress and build a better tomorrow for future generations,” said Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif al Thani at an event held on the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace at the headquarters of the UN in New York.
She highlighted the “generation amazing” initiative launched by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC). She explained that this initiative seeks to enhance the ability of sport to encourage social change and break social barriers, and seeks to use the game of football for development and for addressing social issues in countries with specific needs in line with the goals of sustainable development.
SC Secretary-General Hassan al Thawadi said Qatar is doing all it can to make the event about more than football.
He said the competition will help to culturally connect the Middle East with the rest of the world.
