The Community College of Qatar (CCQ) opened a new campus at Al Khor on Tuesday with a capacity to accommodate 4,000 students to serve the northern region.
The new campus, spread across three buildings, adds 41 classrooms, 11 science and computer labs, and a state-of-the-art testing centre to the college’s capacity. Further augmenting the on-campus experience is a range of modern facilities, including 28 offices, three fully-equipped clinics, a multipurpose meeting room, a well-resourced teachers’ lounge, and numerous green areas throughout the premises.
Speaking to media during the opening, Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Dr Mohammed bin Abdul Wahed al Hammadi said, “CCQ is one of the essential educational institutions in Qatar and one that presents students with a wide range of unique educational paths. Recently, we have noticed a significant increase in the number of students enrolling at the college, which reached about 5,000 in Doha, and that presented the need to open new campuses in other regions, in order to provide CCQ’s educational services to the residents of these areas.”
He said the new campus is part of ministry’s commitment to provide more opportunities for students to pursue higher education.
He also said that they are planning to open another campus in the southern region. “We are happy for this new opening which is set to host around 4,000 male/female students, in addition to some technical training programmes. We also have plans to open another community college in the southern region, for which we have already allocated a piece of land,” he added.
The minister said in the past 3-4 years, the number of institutions for higher studies in Qatar increased from 16 to 26. “We are also in the middle of discussions with some countries to build branches of some of their universities here in Qatar,” he said.
Dr Ibrahim Saleh al Naimi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education and Higher Education, said building a new campus at Al Khor was a good choice to give an opportunity for the people of this region to enroll at the CCQ.
“The number of CCQ graduates has reached around 1,000 a year, who now serve the various sectors of the country and successfully join many of the important state institutions, including the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, as well as other agencies and governmental bodies through the College’s specialised degree programmes,” he said.
