INTERNATIONAL Biobanking Conference, featuring scientists and biobanking experts from around the world, will be held at the Sheraton hotel in Doha from March 25 to 27.
Being organised by Qatar Biobank, in partnership with the European and Middle Eastern Society for Biopreservation and Biobanking (ESBB) and supported by BBMRI-ERIC, a European research infrastructure for biobanking, and the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER), the three-day conference is titled ‘Quality Matters: A Global Discussion in Qatar.’
The conference will bring together local and international experts on biobanking and personalised medicine, scientists, researchers and medical practitioners.
Recently, the Qatar Biobank reached a major milestone by welcoming its 20,000th participant in its efforts to recruit 60,000 participants from across Qatar to take part in the Qatar Biobank’s medical research initiative.
Director of Qatar Biobank Dr Nahla Afifi said they were adding new test to the existing list of tests -- the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Cognitive Function Testing. Currently, about 66 tests are done and it takes around three hours. “As part of Qatar Biobank cohort study eligible participants who have completed their initial visit are being invited to participate in an additional phase involving MRI scanning and CANTAB cognitive testing. An MRI scan of the brain will be performed.”
Board Chairperson of Qatar Biobank and Chairperson of Qatar Genome Programme Committee Dr Asmaa al Thani said that through the conference, they were seeking ways to develop systems that will make citizens’ personal medical data accessible to all healthcare centres, hospitals and clinics in the best quality possible in order to conduct tailored medical research, and provide efficient and customised treatment. “At the conference we will be presenting our up-to-date results from the analyses of more than 15,000 participants’ samples.
