Ghanaian traditional dances added sparkle to the 62nd Independence Day celebrations of the country. Different kinds of dances performed on various occasions and in social functions in Ghana were showcased at the event. The performances also represented different regions of Ghana. Dressed in typical Ghanaian attires, the performers welcomed the guests, ushering them into the venue dancing all the way. And the dignitaries were ushered in with special performances.
With every visitor being given a piece of ‘kente’, a typical Ghanaian fabric, to cover their heads or shoulders with, one felt transported to Ghana itself.
Ghanaian Ambassador to Qatar HE Emmanuel Enos said that it is a sheer joy to see the attendees clothed in kente, a piece of clothing that has Ghana written all over it. “It is even gratifying to see our guests clothed in our traditional cloth popularly known as ‘kente’. We thank you for not just celebrating with us but also turning “Ghanaians” for this occasion.”
The colourful ceremony was dominated by different kinds of dances which entertained all those present.
The function kicked off with the Kpalogo dance, which is performed by the Ga tribes of the Greater Accra of Ghana. This is a social dance performed on all occasions.
Second came the Sanga, a communal dance common among the Bandas of Wenchi in Brong –Ahafo region of Ghana and is performed on all occasions.
Then there was the Gota which is a dace from the Volta region of Ghana. This dance is performed to show appreciation of all the invited guests for honouring the invitation by attending a function, and is performed on all occasions.
Kete, a social dance usually performed to usher kings and queens into all functions. This dance is performed by the Akana including Ashantis, Bono Ahafos and Akyims of Ghana.
Ruby Attriki, popularly referred to as Mama Africa, said that they have been showcasing their culture for the last ten years in Qatar. “We have been performing in different places but this programme was conceived specially for the 62nd Independence Day celebrations.”
Mama Africa, who manages the group, said that they were honoured to be part of the celebrations. “For a long time, we had not had an embassy here, and now that we have it here, it was in the fitness of things that we should celebrate our national day in style, showcasing our art and culture. This is our first Independence Day function in Qatar and we are really honoured to honour our country with this.”
She said that they are always happy to showcase the Ghanaian culture here in Qatar. “We are always ready. Whoever wants us to enliven their function with our performances we will be happy to do that. This is because unity is strength and we are always one.”
Mama Africa added that soon they would have an event for the Ghanaians in Simaisma where they are going to showcase the diversity of the Ghanaian culture. “It will be a daylong event.”
She said that they will also be participating in upcoming event as part of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
