Beirut: Dozens of Islamic State militants surrendered to US-backed forces in eastern Syria on Monday as battles dragged on, Kurdish sources and a monitoring group said.
“A large group of Daesh fighters have surrendered to our fighters today and we are expecting more to surrender later in the day,” Adnan Afrin, a commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), told dpa from Baghuz village.
Daesh is the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group. Baghuz, located on the Euphrates River in eastern Syria near the border with Iraq, is the last significant territory still in the hands of Islamic State, which for years controlled wide swathes of both countries. (dpa)
