Twice World Cup champions Laetisha Scanlan provided crucial support to his partner Michael Coles and the two Australians upstaged a classy field to win the Mixed Team Trap title at the Qatar Open in Shotgun 2019 on Monday.
It was a final between two unexpected teams at the Losail Ranges. Scanlan, who won the Trap title here in 2013, and Coles, whose best was a 14th place in the 2014 Acapulco World Cup, shot 35 in the final to get the better of Iranians Seyed Yeganeh Rohollani and Shiva Farahpour Bidgoli by a target in a stirring finish.
Scanlan and Coles posted the highest qualifying score of 138. Coles struck the second highest 71 behind top-scorer Italian Mauro de Filippis (74) and Scanlan topped in the women’s section with 67. Outsiders Iranians collected 133 and edged Indians Kynan Chenai, the former Asian Championship silver medallist, and Rajeshwari Kumari in the shootoff to grab the last spot in the finals.
But with steady performance, Rohollani and Bidgoli went on to make it to the final against an inspired Australian duo. Both pairs battled hard and in the end, it was Coles and Scanlan, fifth in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, who managed to land the win and the prize money of $3,500.
French Sebastien Guerrero, fourth in the 2018 Tucson World Cup, and Melanie Couzy, the European champion who won the bronze medal in the 2018 World Cup as well, were third managing 28. They were also involved in a shootoff with Olympic medalists and world champions Massimo Fabrizzi and Jessica Rossi for placement in the finals.
Fabrizzi and Rossi secured the fourth spot with 25. The strong Slovak pair of Erik Varga and Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova was really unfortunate and they had to be satisfied with the fifth spot, having managed only 19. Three-time world champion Varga, who has one World Cup Finals and two World Cups to his credit, shot 68, while double Olympic silver medallist Stefecekova, who has also been a multiple medal winner in the World Championships, World Cup and World Cup Finals, got 66 to post 134 in the qualifying rounds.
The sixth place was taken by Italian-New Zealand duo of Luca Miotto and Natalie Rooney, who were the first to go out of the finals with 16, though they had done well to collect 134 in the qualifying.
In all, 38 pairs contested in the event, including six local teams and the best Qatari finishers were Rashid al Athba and Kholoud al Khalaf (27th with 122) and Masoud al Adba and Bana Haji (28th with 121). They were followed by Mohammed Khejaim and Noora al Mohannadi, who got 29th, after tallying 121.
Qatar Shooting and Archery Association President President Ali Mohammed al Kuwari and Moroccan Shooting Sports Federation Technical Committee member Abdul Latif Zacidi gave away the prizes.
