Josoor Institute, a centre of excellence for sports and events industries that is inspired and developed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), in collaboration with the Sustainability Department of the SC, recently held a workshop titled ‘The Future of Sustainable Buildings’.
The workshop, delivered by international experts, was the fourth sustainability workshop delivered by Josoor Institute and part of the SC’s efforts to leave a legacy of green buildings and green building skills and practices in the local and regional market construction industry.
The workshop, which was attended by over 100 professionals in the sustainability field, explored deep green building design as a solution to the current environmental challenges such as water scarcity and climate change. The workshop posed a challenge to create net-zero energy and net-zero water buildings in hot and arid climates. The challenge and concepts were presented through case studies of certified Living Buildings and Net Zero energy facilities. Architectural as well as engineering solutions were discussed.
The workshop was presented by Jason F McLennan, CEO and founder of McLennan Design; Kevin Hydes, CEO & president of Integral Group; and Pete Mu?oz, senior engineer and practice leader of Biohabitats. They discussed leading trends in Green Building practice and the future of architecture, focusing on best practices in water conservation and treatment, and mechanical and passive solutions for comfort.
McLennan, who is considered one of the world’s most influential experts in the field of sustainable architecture, said, “Sports brings people from all backgrounds together like almost nothing else. When you have a captive audience that’s there to watch something, it’s the perfect opportunity to also present to them issues of responsibility towards the environment and natural resources.”
The workshop equipped delegates with knowledge of cutting-edge sustainable design projects in multiple climate zones, the benefits of Deep Green Design solutions, and advanced water efficiency, reclamation and treatment systems.
Ghanim al Sulaiti, an entrepreneur working on plant and health related projects who was a delegate at the workshop, said: “The workshop enables businesspeople in Qatar to embrace the concept of sustainable development and innovation. I am pleased to have attended this workshop.”
The Future of Sustainable Buildings workshop enhanced the capability of the delegates in helping Qatar deliver sustainable outcomes in the design, construction and operation of the 2022 FIFA World CupM infrastructure.
