Former Asia champion and double Olympian Rashid Saleh Hamad overcame a host of Kuwaiti shooters to win the Men’s Skeet crown at the Sheikh Ali Bin Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah Shooting Cup
on Saturday.
The Qatari was on the top of his game right from the qualifying stages to the gold medal match. In the title clash, he edged Abdul Aziz Saad (47) by a target to emerge the winner.
Saud Habib secured the bronze medal with 37 hits. Mansour Alrashidi was fourth, hitting 28, while Mohammed Naif Aldehani (22) and Mohammed Alawad (15) got the fifth and six places, respectively.
Rashid Saleh Hamad and Saad had earlier got the highest 120 scores during the qualifying rounds and the two needed a shootoff to decide the topper. The Qatari shooter, who won the Asian crown in 2008 in Jaipur (India) and was fifth in the 2014 Granada World Championships, got the better of the Kuwaiti challenger 4-3.
“It was a close and tough fight for the gold medal and I won on the last shot, which makes me very happy. This was a very good preparation for me as this is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification year. This victory will certainly boost my confidence and performance. I’m trying my best to get into top shape before the qualification events and I’ll try to put in my most sincere efforts to qualify for the Olympics for the third time,” he commented after his victory.
“This display will also set me well for the Qatar Open in Shotgun, which is scheduled at the Losail Ranges in February. I hope to do well there too,”
he added.
