Vienna: A Czech ski instructor was killed by an avalanche in Austria on Tuesday, the 11th avalanche fatality the Alpine country has seen this winter amid historic snowfall.
The 24-year-old man was skiing off-piste with his father at the Ankogel mountain in southern Austria when he was swept away and buried by loose snow, according to police.
The number of people who have died in avalanches since November is about double the long-term average, according to the Alpine Safety Board, a national platform that collects accident statistics. The amount of snow that has fallen since the start of the year has broken historic records. (DPA)
