SEHHA-QSBD, a Qatar University (QU) dual project won bronze in the Middle East Regional Award category at the Reimagine Education
Conference recently.
The project is a collaboration between QU’s Sciences Education and Human Health Activity (SEHHA) and Qatari Scientists in Biological Diversity (QSBD), a programme which aims to attract both male and female Qataris to the field of health, science and scientific research.
Reimagine celebrates and rewards the most successful educational and innovative projects that enhance the learning outcomes and employability annually through the conference.
Nunzio Quacquarelli, CEO of QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), a leading global higher education company, said that more than 1186 projects were submitted for the awards, of which only 160 were nominated to be the finalists. Quacquarelli praised QU and its incredible support to enhancing learning experiences globally and for its continued support to innovative educational projects.
During the conference, Dr Omar al Ansari, vice president of Academic Affairs at QU, gave a speech where he talked about the vital role the university plays in supporting educational systems worldwide. He highlighted the 17 QU research centres that work collaboratively towards excellence. QU ranked 332 among the world’s best universities, he says, and 6th among best Middle East universities.
Dr Mariam al Maadeed, vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at QU commented, “Embedding the aspect of career success in high school students is one of the major anchors to achieve Qatar vision 2030 and increase our national capacities of Qatari health professionals, natural scientists and researchers.”
She adds, “We are proud to see how far this project has reached among the national and international scopes. We echo the statement made by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser during the inauguration of the Sidra Medical Center. In the context of healthcare services improvement, the State of Qatar endeavours to graduate competent candidates in this area. This is a core of the professional security and a platform of the national security of any state. Her Highness pointed that the shortage of qualified professionals in a sector will render a state unable to fulfil its duties at certain point in history.”
Professor Asmaa al Thani, dean of the College of Health Sciences and the director of the Biomedical Research Center, said, “SEHHA- QSBD Dual project was established in 2013 to build national capacities of Qataris in the fields of healthcare and natural science. Up to this year, the project hosted over 470 Qatari students from 95 percent of the high schools across Qatar. The project is a great opportunity for Qatari high school students to explore the career of health sciences, apply their innovative ideas and integrate into meaningful internships.”
Professor Asmaa added that the project is currently being sponsored by Qatar BioBank, operated by QU-Health and the Biomedical Research Center, in collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Interior, Al-Gannas Qatari Society at Katara Cultural Village, Qatar Falcon Genome Project, Sidra Medicine and the Primary Healthcare Corporation.
