Tasmeem Doha, the international art and design conference at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) in Education City, has announced that the theme for its upcoming conference to be held from March 13 to 15, will be ‘Hekayat’ (the Arabic word for ‘stories’).
The conference will feature workshops, exhibitions and prominent speakers from all over the world.
Previous speakers at the conference, which began in 2004 at VCUarts Qatar, included major artists and designers such as architect Rem Koolhaas, design company IDEO partner Tom Kelley, filmmaker and YouTube personality Casey Neistat and Qatari-American writer Sophia al Maria.
Workshops at previous Tasmeem Doha conferences have seen participants producing bicycles from bamboo, painting Arabic script with light, designing robots with characters and building a mini-golf course. The art and design conference takes place in every two years and is free and open to the public.
The co-Chairs for Tasmeem Doha 2019 are Hadeer Omar, Noha Fouad, Wajiha Pervez and Yasmeen Suleiman, who are all VCUarts Qatar alumni.
Wajiha Pervez said, “Hekayat is about the conversation that happens between the start and the ending, the challenges and hurdles, and how you complete a journey. It’s all the layers that no one talks about.”
Noha Fouad echoed the same vision, adding, “In highlighting the process, Hekayat levels the playing field. Stories are very relatable and invoke empathy. I may not relate to the whole, but I can connect with something in the process.”
Workshops at Tasmeem Doha 2019 will include Ajrakh block printing, cross stitch embroidery, wooden spoon carving and recordable greeting cards. It will involve student-led workshops, and exhibitions of student work and of international artists. There will also be a pop-up shop selling merchandise which has been specially designed for Tasmeem Doha 2019.
“There is no Hekayat without sharing, which speaks to the inclusivity of the event. At the core of that is the value of that exchange in all its forms,” said Yasmeen Suleiman, VCUarts Qatar’s Materials Library Curator and conference co-chair.
The conference at VCUarts Qatar in Education City will provide a platform where storytelling can be explored through various mediums, and stories can be shared and celebrated in a multitude of forms.
