The United States is committed to continuing the fight against Islamic State militants in Iraq and elsewhere, Baghdad said Saturday after a phone call between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel-Mahdi.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from war-torn Syria, declaring victory over Islamic State there. The decision has rattled US allies, who said the radical group has not been completely defeated. Abdel-Mahdi told Pompeo that the security situation in neighbouring Syria has a direct impact on Iraq’s national security and regional stability, a statement from the Iraqi government’s media office said.
In 2014, IS seized large chunks of territory in Iraq. Last December, then PM Haider al-Abadi declared that Iraqi territory had been liberated from Islamic State after a US-backed military campaign lasting more than three years.
