THOUSANDS of expatriates thronged different venues for National Day celebrations across the country on Tuesday, to take part in a wide range of activities organised to mark the occasion.
The community activities were designed to showcase diverse cultural traditions of the expatriates and highlight the friendly relations between Qatar and those countries.
Qatar National Day Associated Activities Organising Committee under the Ministry of Interior (MoI) had made elaborate arrangements for expatriates to celebrate National Day in different parts of Qatar.
The important venues for expatriates to celebrate the National Day were Wakra Sports Complex, Barwa Al Baraha, Labour City at Asian Town, Cricket Stadium at Asian Town, Al Shahaniya Industrial Area, Lusail Sports Arena and Al Khor Sports Complex.
Programmes presented by students of different expatriate schools and communities not only highlighted the different cultures of Qatar’s residents, but also became a platform to show support and respect for Qatar as an independent and sovereign country.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Assistant Manager of South Police Department Nasser al Qahtani said, “Expatriate communities are very important for Qatar and they have played a key role in the development of our country. Qatar National Day celebration is an opportunity for us to interact with them and know each other. We value their respect and their contributions to our nation.”
Diplomats and officials of different embassies, officials of Public Relation Department of the MoI, representatives of different sociocultural organisations, and members of management committees of different schools and private educational institutes attended the community events.
Besides, more than 10,000 workers attended sports and cultural events held at Asian Town Labour City and Cricket Stadium, which was one of the highlights of this year’s community events for National Day celebrations.
Children from expat schools wowed the audience with a wide variety of entertaining programmes. These schools included Ideal Indian School, Bangladesh MHM, Bhavan’s Public Schools, Birla Public School, Doha Modern Indian School, DPS MIS School, MES Indian School, Noble International School, Olive International School, Pak Shama School, Pakistan International School, Philippines International School, Philippines Doha School, Rajagiri Indian School, Shantiniketan Indian School and Stafford Sri Lankan Schools.
The programme presented by Qatar Institute for Speech and Hearing was another highlight of the events.
The International Cricket Tournament at Asian Town, in which popular players from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Afghanistan took part, was another event that saw large gathering of cricket lovers.
Some of the prominent cricketers who remained an attraction for the audience during the tournament were Asadullah Khan, Mohammad Yamin Ahmadzai, Mohammad Ashraful, Mohammad Elias, Venkatesh Prasad, Sanjam Regmiand, Mohamad Hasim Ansari, Umar Gul, Fawad Alam, Asela Gunaratne and Ajantha Mendis.
Furthermore, Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi and Nepalese community teams staged cultural shows to enthrall the audience at Asian Town.
Considering the size of the community, for the first time, Kerala
Muslim Cultural Centre, an organisation of expatriates from the southern Indian state, was offered a venue at Al Wakra Sports Complex for the celebration.
The community celebrations also featured 68 cultural shows in different Asian languages by the major Asian expatriate communities, namely Indian, Nepalese, Pakistani, Bangladesh, Sri Lankan and Indonesian.
Furthermore, popular bands from different Asian countries performed live concerts regaling the audience. Pakistani Musical Concert at Al Wakra stadium was a hit with the participation of popular artistes including Qazi Aref, Khalid Malik, WisalKhayal, Irfan, Amin Iqbal, Sajid, Afshan Zaibi, Dil Raj, Laila Nihal, Deeba Kiran, Rani and Wisal Khiyal.
The events also included colourful cultural parades at Al Wakra Sports Club and Asian city attended by more than 3,000 and 2,000 people respectively.The folklore shows and musical performances by Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Indian communities at Al Khor Sports Complex as well as traditional thematic shows at Barwa Al Baraha (Doha Industrial Area) were the other major highlights of the community
celebrations.
The event also featured public awareness programmes by different departments of the Ministry of
Interior.
