The 10th Race Meeting, featuring Al Daayen Cup and Doha Cup, turned out to be an exciting affair as jockey Harry Bentley, trainer Jassim Mohammed Ghazali Jahromi and owner Khalifa bin Sheail al Kuwari all ended up with a memorable treble on Thursday.
At the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s dirt track in New Al Rayyan, Bentley began his winning spree a bit late in the day. In the seventh race – Thoroughbred Handicap Class 3 (1,700m), he pushed five-year-old perigee to a less than a length triumph over Rich History.
While this was the second winner for owner Kuwari, it was the first of the day for both the jockey and trainer Jahromi. It must be a big relief for the winning party as the five-year-old bay colt had not been able to win a single race last season. Overall, it was his third victory in 21 races, including three this season.
Bentley and Jahromi then plotted a fantastic triumph by Spaghetti for owner Kuwari in the Daayen Cup over 1,800m distance. The six-year-old runner, rated 115, worked up a hot pace and managed to win by six and a three quarters against Al Shaqab Racing-owned Al Walid, an Alban de Mieulle ward ridden by Faleh Bughanaim.
The third spot was taken by Messine De Sinuhe with JP Guillambert astride, while 2017 Dubai Kahayla Classic winner Reda and TM Thunder Struck, rated highest at 122 and having 12 creditable wins to his name, were fourth and fifth, respectively.
For the 2016 Qatar Silver Sword and Amir’s Silver Sword winner Spaghetti, it was the first race of the season and the victory helped him reach six in 15 runs.
Both Bentley and Jahromi progressed to complete their grand treble when eight-year-old grey horse Rassan, owned by Jassim bin Ali al Attiyah, went three lengths clear of Raqee (Saleem Golam) before bagging the Doha Cup sprint.
Al Muntathar (Eduardo Pedroza) beat Samhan AL Shajaa by short head to win the third spot and Aahil (Ronan Thomas) notched up the fifth place.
Rassan, who had five winners in 12 runs last season, had a warm-up race before but he showed his real pace in the second run today and emerged an easy winner, his overall 15th in 47 races.
Earlier, owner Kuwari got the first winner of the day through Yanar. Rider Guillambert took the five-year-old grey filly off to a hot pace and she went on to claim the victory by 17 lengths against Enfrad (Faleh Bughanaim). Alanoud was third.
Guillambert and trainer Mohammed Riyaz Ibrahim Kasim wrapped up a fine double as Crisscrossed beat Tadeem by five lengths in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 5 (1,800m). Truancy picked the third spot.
Ventura Shadow, owned by Mohammed Nasser al Naimi, Eng Hassan Ali al Abdulmalik’s Catch A Wave, Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim bin Thani al Thani-owned Admiral and Saab, owned and trained by Khalid Nasser Hamad al Naimi, shared other four races of the day.
