Qatar Charity (QC) has distributed food parcels to 20,000 people in the villages in the Eastern Province of Kenya, where drought has caused many deaths.
The emergency aid especially helped malnourished children and nomadic pastoralists who lost large numbers of livestock.
Each food parcel included corn flour, beans, rice and cooking oil, sufficient for a family for a month.
Qatari Ambassador to Kenya HE Jabr bin Ali al Dosari participated with QC team in the distribution of the food parcels, applauding QC's humanitarian efforts in Kenya. He also hoped that more relief and development projects would be implemented by the charity in these parts of the country, where a large number of people suffer from poverty.
After his visit to the only hospital in the area which lacks basic services, the ambassador underlined the importance of health projects for the residents of the region."I have witnessed the tragedy experienced by the people of this region, where the healthcare services are very poor," he said.
Mohammad Ali Loulkri, Kenyan parliamentary deputy, thanked the ambassador and the Qatari donors for helping the Kenyan people."I am happy with the attendance of the ambassador to assess the needs of people," Loulkri added.
According to UN reports, East Africa, particularly Kenya and Somalia, is experiencing a severe drought due to the delay in the arrival of seasonal rains, threatening the lives of millions of people. There is a sharp decline in local food production, while humanitarian aid is not reaching many places due to various reasons.
The drought conditions, which are expected to continue until the end of 2018, have caused food insecurity for about 3.4 million people. According to estimates, 482,882 children need treatment for acute malnutrition, including 104,614 severely malnourished children. Approximately 88 percent of these children are from 23 arid and semi-arid provinces.
It is worth mentioning that QC carries out various projects in Kenya, including digging of wells, distribution of relief aid and construction of projects, in addition to sponsoring more than 4,000 orphans.
