Minister of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs HE Dr Issa bin Saad al Jafali al Nuaimi has affirmed Qatar's commitment to combatting human trafficking in compliance with international laws, and strengthening cooperation with relevant stakeholders to meet common challenges in this regard.
Addressing the opening of a forum organised by Qatar Airways on Sunday, the minister said that Doha, which has supported the UN Global Plan of Action against Human Trafficking since its launch, adopted national legislation criminalising all forms and patterns of human trafficking.
He mentioned the establishment of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, which is the national coordinator for monitoring and prevention of combating this phenomenon, in Doha.
He also mentioned adoption of the National Plan to Combat Human Trafficking, which is based on prevention, awareness-raising, training of workers in different sectors of society, protection and care for victims and prosecution of perpetrators, as well as regional and international cooperation to combat this crime.
He stressed the commitment of the committee to provide all forms of cooperation and support to local and international partners to contribute to training and awareness of all stakeholders, including those working in the aviation sector, both land and air services, in order to contribute to the protection and rehabilitation of victims of this crime.
The minister noted that the crime of human trafficking has become a global phenomenon that poses a threat to societies and represents a major challenge to the international community and its efforts to achieve the development and prosperity of peoples.
He pointed out that such trans-border crimes may take on many forms to move between countries at different airports and ports, using various means such as deception, exploitation, fraud or the threat of use of force, calling for training and awareness of airport employees and airlines on the features of this crime in order to be able to tackle them.
The minister praised the efforts of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to sensitise airport staff and cabin crews to indicators of human trafficking through the guidance issued periodically by the organisation in cooperation with competent international bodies to combat this crime.
He also commended Qatar Airways' keenness to take care of its ground and air crews' training on how to act in case of a crime indicator.
